A monitor of Helsinki Association subjected to violence

On March 1 2011, the monitor of Helsinki Association Arman Veziryan has been subjected to violence by the police officers when he was carrying out his professional duties.

On March 1st at 19:04, during the opposition rally organised by the Armenian National Congress (ANC) party at the Mashtots-Isahakyan crossroad, police officers prevented Arman Veziryan, a human rights monitor for the Helsinki Association, from carrying out his professional duties.

Clash between police and protesters

On March 3rd 2011, a clash took place between police officers and demonstrating street traders during a protest in front of the Armenian government building. Some demonstrators, including former political prisoner and Armenian National Congress (ANC) opposition party activist, Vardges Gaspari, were taken to the police Department of Kentron district. Police officers prohibited Gaspari’s lawyer from entering the police station.

Women Representatives оf the Armenian National Congress Were Beaten

On 11 May, 2009 women distributing booklets informing on the meeting of May 13 with the candidate of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) were beaten in Avan district, Yerevan. They had been chased and then several men attacked the women and threw stones at them. 3 women had been hospitalized as they were injured.

The Activist of the Armenian National Congress Tigran Arakelyan was Arrested

On July 05, 2009 Tigran Arakelyan, the activist of the Armenian National Congress’s youth wing was arrested. He was called to the Police Department of Kentron district as a witness, and then he was detained as a suspect. T. Arakelyan is accused of beating a police officer. He was taken under detention for two months.

Tigran Arakelyan’s Article Changed

Tigran Arakelyan who was accused of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (Hooliganism) has been in prison for 3 months. Now he is accused of Article 316, part 3 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (Dangerous abuses towards the law enforcement bodies), which provides up to 10 years of imprisonment.Note that Tigran Arakelyan was accused because a quarrel was provoked between the policemen T. Arakelyan.
