On April 7, 2010 Ernest Vardanyan, 33, a journalist of Armenian origin, was arrested in the Republic of Transdniestria on charges of espionage for Moldova and may face 12-20 years in prison.
The Armenian journalist freelanced for the Russian Internet news agency Novy Region (in the unrecognized Republic of Transdniestria). In 2009, he started to work also for the Chisinau-based newspaper Puls, which caused irritation among Transdniestria authorities.

On 17.04.2009 the trial over Gagik Shamshyan /defense attorney H. Arsenyan/, photojournalist of “Chorord Ishkhanutyun” and “Aravot”, held in the Court of Kentron and Norq-Marash districts, Yerevan was over. The journalist was accused of Article 343, part 3 of the Criminal Code of RA for showing disrespect towards the Court (judge to the case G. Poghosyan, prosecutor to the case L. Charkhifalakyan).
